Coaching and mentoring for change

Developing coaching skills to effect culture change.

Changing the conversation – culture change through coaching and mentoring

Aims

This workshop aims to enable participants to consider the culture within their area of policing and to develop their coaching and mentoring skills, in order to contribute to culture change.

The workshops will:

  • raise your awareness of culture
  • encourage you to consider how change and inclusivity can be built from your leadership
  • develop your personal leadership style through coaching and mentoring
  • raise awareness about a coaching style of leadership
  • deepen understanding of the use of coaching in day-to-day management
  • develop and practice your coaching and mentoring skills
  • enable you to play an active role in the development, progression and retention of officers and staff from groups with low participation in the police workforce

What the workshops involve

The workshops include discussions about police culture and your place in it. Through the two and a half days, we will encourage you to consider how you can build an inclusive environment through coaching and mentoring, and how these relationships can be affected by differences or perceived differences.

The workshops are created from the perspective that better communication – particularly listening – will enhance your effectiveness as a leader, enabling you to have better, more effective conversations with anyone.

It involves the following three sections.

  • Pre-work, including mandatory learning for the online session (approximately one hour).
  • A three-hour online session.
  • A two-day, face-to-face workshop. This workshop covers culture diagnosis using Johnson and Scholes’ cultural web model, reflection on self and leadership, the impact of bias on individuals and groups, developing an inclusive culture, core introductory skills for coaching and mentoring using coaching in day-to-day management.

These sections are interspersed with periods of reading and video viewing, as well as time in the workplace for your learning to be reflected on and applied.

You will be supported throughout with access to two highly experienced executive coaches. These coaches will be leading the sessions.

Those who attend the programme commit to working with at least three people from groups with low participation in the police workforce over a period of 18 months. You will be asked in a follow-up survey whether the skills you've learned on the course have been useful.
