We need to have many more conversations across policing about neurodiversity and the most important thing in those conversations is our intent, not the precise words or terms we use.

The College of Policing has created a glossary of terms to help those conversations, by acknowledging the complexity and agreeing some shared understanding about neurodiversity.

The glossary has been produced by the College’s neurodiversity working group, which will:

  • work closely with stakeholders to review current and good practices and learning within and outside of the police service
  • capture the experiences of neurodiverse people within the police service to help enhance learning
  • ensure cross-working and sharing of learning, where possible with other related projects and programmes, including the reasonable adjustments project, the prefer not to say project and the uplift programme

It has been developed for all officers, staff and volunteers to help raise awareness and enhance our understanding of neurodiversity. It collates some of the most frequently used terms regarding neurodiversity and is not intended to be a definitive list of terms.

The glossary will be regularly reviewed and updated to reflect current policies and good practice. We welcome your feedback on current content and suggestions for future inclusion.
