National training for responsible use of generative AI

Officers and staff across England and Wales can now access new national e-learning on using Microsoft Copilot. It is designed to support the safe, effective and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) across policing.
Microsoft Copilot is available to forces through the national Microsoft 365 agreement. Successful adoption requires officers and staff to understand how to use AI tools effectively, recognise their limitations and apply professional judgement when using AI-generated content.
The Copilot e-learning course is built around a simple principle: Use. Check. Own.
It emphasises that:
- Copilot can help officers and staff work more efficiently by supporting administrative and knowledge-based tasks
- AI can support decision making, but it does not replace professional judgement
- users remain accountable for any content generated by Copilot
- AI outputs can be inaccurate, incomplete, outdated or biased and should always be checked before use
- content should be verified by considering its source, sense and impact before relying on it
- Copilot must not be used to create, review, edit or generate material that forms part of the evidential process unless specifically approved under the relevant governance arrangements
The training, developed in partnership with PoliceAI, takes around ten minutes to complete. It is available now on College Learn (you will need to log in).

Looking ahead, PoliceAI will launch the Copilot Centre of Excellence this autumn. This will give forces a national focal point for adopting Copilot, sharing good practice, use cases, prompts and lessons learned, supporting forces at every stage of their AI journey.
