The police leadership programme – stage 4 (senior leaders) is now open for applications from chief superintendents, superintendents, chief inspectors and police staff in equivalent roles. The first course begins this April 2024.

The course replaces our senior leadership development programme (SLDP). It supports senior officers and staff to lead effectively in a complex and demanding environment, equipping them with the skills they need to continuously develop in their current role and prepare for potential progression.

It provides delegates with an opportunity to understand their personal impact as leaders and develop the skills required by a senior leader, including:

  • maximising performance through data literacy and evidence-based policing
  • managing change
  • effective use of communication internally and externally, to support communities and partnerships
  • understanding organisational strategy and the links to business and finance

The new course is completed over nine months, using a combination of online and face-to-face learning. It consists of four modules that cover core learning in the following areas.

  • Personal leadership in a senior role.
  • Operational and work-based leadership in a senior role.
  • Enabling inclusive leadership.
  • Strategic organisational leadership.
  • Supporting communities and partnerships as a senior leader.
  • Role-specific learning.

The new leadership module on enabling inclusivity focuses on the role of the senior leader in creating a positive change in the workplace. It also explores the significance of organisational culture and accountability.

The role-specific learning is for superintendents, chief superintendents, and staff and volunteers working at this level. This focuses on decision making, management of critical incidents and further development of skills as a strategic leader in policing.
