Freedom of information (FOI)

How to make a freedom of information (FOI) request.

The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) gives you the right to see the information that public organisations hold. You have the right to ask to see recorded information held by us.

Our publication scheme shows published information about our spending, priorities, decision-making, policies and procedures.

Our disclosure log shows our responses to previous FOI requests.

There is a different way to make a request if you want information that we hold about you.

Make a freedom of information (FOI) request

If the information you need has not already been published on our website, in our disclosure log or through our publication scheme then you can make an FOI request by writing to us or by emailing: foi@college.police.uk

Our address is: FOI team, College of Policing, Leamington Road, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Coventry, CV8 3EN.

In your FOI request you should tell us:

  • your name
  • an address where letters can be sent or an email address
  • what information you would like

If you do not want to, or cannot, access the information online or by inspection at our premises we can usually arrange to send information to you in paper copy (although there may be a charge for this).

If you require a printed copy of the publication scheme or a copy in an alternative format, please contact foi@college.police.uk

Request personal information

There is a different way to make a request if you want information that we hold about you (a subject access request).

Cost of information

We will only charge you for hard copies or copying onto media (for example, a compact disc).

The charges will vary according to how information is made available.

If the cost of retrieving and sending you the information is more than £450, the FOI Act provides we do not have to provide you with the requested information.

The cost of retrieving and sending the information is worked out by multiplying the hours spent on the request by an hourly rate, which is set by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

Refusing information requests

If we are unable to disclose the information requested, we will always explain the reasons why and which exemption(s) have been applied.

Full detail on the exemptions under the FOI Act as well as general information can be found on the ICO website.

Your issue will be looked at by somebody not involved in the handling of your original request.

You will receive a response as soon as possible and in most cases within 20 working days of receipt.

Appeal to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)

If you are dissatisfied with our internal review, you will have a further right of appeal to the Information Commissioner.
