The first module of a three-step process to becoming a digital media investigator (DMI).
This module is followed by a minimum period of six months’ workplace-based assessment and finishes with the Hydra module, a two-day exercise in an immersive, interactive environment to consolidate learning.
By the end of this initial course, learners will be able to:
- show knowledge and understanding of investigative opportunities presented by the exploitation of digital data
- formulate and correctly record a strategy, based upon a scenario
- demonstrate effective decision-making to support the Senior Investigating Officer in a major investigation and an ability to change their strategy dynamically as the investigation progresses
Aims
To provide the foundation and core skills to enable individuals to effectively perform the role of DMI.
Objectives
On successful completion of this module learners will be able to:
- understand the role and responsibilities of the DMI
- apply the relevant legislation associated with the process for the acquisition of communications data
- analyse the investigative opportunities offered by digital data
- understand the tactical application of open and closed source intelligence
- understand how Wi-Fi works and identify sources of Wi-Fi data
- understand Radio Network Principles and evaluate the benefits a Radio Frequency Propagation Survey (RFPS) can bring to an investigation
- understand the basic concepts of cloud data
- identify other sources of data and their potential investigative contribution
- understand the role of the DMI
Methods of delivery
The module is trainer-led, classroom-based and delivered to a maximum of 12 delegates.

College Learn – e-learning programmes:
Learners are required to achieve a minimum score of 80% in the College Learn DMI assessment in order to attend the classroom-based element of the programme. |
