Inside an HMICFRS inspection – perspectives, insights and myth busting
This session brings together two unique viewpoints on the HMICFRS inspection process: Kathryn Stone OBE, His Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue, and Chief Constable Catherine Roper of Wiltshire Police.
Together, they offer a candid and practical exploration of what inspections look and feel like on both sides—what it’s like to lead an inspection and what it’s like to be inspected at chief officer level.
Participants will gain:
- first-hand insights into how HMICFRS approaches inspections, assessment, and engagement with forces
- a chief constable’s perspective on preparing for inspection, leading teams through the process, and sustaining improvements

Non-reportable media briefings: A strategic lever for modern policing
In today’s fast-moving information landscape, the ability to shape the narrative is as critical as the operational response itself. This session explores how non-reportable media briefings (NRBs) can be used as a powerful strategic tool to support policing outcomes at the highest level.
Focusing on real-world application, we will examine how NRBs can enhance investigations, safeguard the public, and strengthen the response to critical and fast-evolving incidents, particularly in an era of increasing information disorder and misinformation.
Drawing on practical examples from forces across the UK, we will share lessons from complex operational environments, including how senior leaders have navigated risk, scrutiny, and stakeholder expectations.
By attending, you will:
- understand how NRBs can influence operational success and protect public safety
- strengthen your grasp of governance, decision-making and delivery frameworks
- enhance your ability to manage legal, operational and reputational risk
- identify when NRBs can add strategic value in high-impact situations
- learn from UK-wide case studies, emerging practice and leadership insights
Tuesday 3 November 2026, 11am to 12:30pm
Information disorder: are you ready?
Misinformation. Disinformation. Malinformation.
The information environment has become a critical operational battleground for policing. False, misleading and manipulated narratives can now spread at speed, shaping public perception, influencing behaviour, undermining investigations and escalating community tensions before forces have an opportunity to respond.
Join National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) information disorder lead ACC Arman Mathieson and Hayley Equi, NPCC Director of Communications, for this timely CPD event which will examine the evolving threat landscape and what it means for policing leaders.
Delegates will explore strategic implications for policing, emerging national thinking and the capabilities forces need to build in order to anticipate, monitor, assess and respond effectively. Through relevant policing case studies and operational learning, the session will examine:
- leadership decision-making during fast-moving incidents
- the management of public trust and legitimacy
- cross-force and partner coordination
- the governance required to operate confidently in complex and contested information environments
The question for every policing leader is simple: Are you ready?

Information disorder: leading policing through the information age
Misinformation. Disinformation. Malinformation.
For policing, information disorder is no longer a communications issue. It is a threat to public safety, public confidence, operational and organisational legitimacy. This senior leaders' CPD event will provide an authoritative update on the current threat landscape and the latest national developments, including work being led through the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) Information Disorder Working Group.
Delegates will examine the strategic implications for policing, emerging national thinking, and the capabilities forces need to build in order to anticipate, prepare for and respond effectively. Drawing on relevant case studies and operational learning, the event will examine:
- leadership decision-making during fast-moving incidents
- the management of public trust and legitimacy
- cross-force and partner coordination
- the governance required to operate confidently in complex information environments
This event will challenge chief officers to consider whether their force has the right structures, skills, partnerships and escalation routes in place to respond effectively. Information disorder is not a future challenge. It is a live leadership issue. Are your force, your people and your partnerships ready?
SIRO Hydra exercise
Our intensive one-day Hydra-facilitated exercise is designed for current and aspiring senior information risk owners (SIROs), providing invaluable experience in handling real-world information security challenges.
Through immersive, scenario-based learning, participants will navigate a simulated information breach, making critical decisions and justifying their reasoning under pressure.
This exercise enhances risk management skills and offers practical strategies for mitigating information security risks.
The session also delves into the role and responsibilities of a SIRO, emphasizing the importance of strong information governance, and highlighting key resources and support networks. Based on a real incident, the scenario underscores the real-world demands that SIROs may face at any time.
Entry requirements
These events are tailored for individuals currently serving as SIROs (or likely to step into the role), specifically at the level of deputy chief constable, assistant chief constable, or equivalent.
Future dates
The next exercise will run on Tuesday 24 March 2026 at our Ryton-on-Dunsmore site.
