CPD events – senior and executive leaders

CPD events for police officers and staff working at chief inspector level and above.

Senior police staff network

The Senior Police Staff Network (SPSN) supports and highlights the work that staff across all policing organisations do to help achieve the best for policing. The network and these events are aimed at police staff at stage 3 of the Leadership standards (currently in middle management positions or higher) who are aspiring to stage 4, and those currently at stage 4 or 5.

The network holds quarterly events, virtually and in person. The events provide opportunities to network and learn from experienced senior police staff guest speakers, to support you in your CPD and help maximise your future career options.

Contact hub@college.police.uk to sign up for email updates about how to register for upcoming network events and secondment opportunities.

Driving data value

Virtual via Microsoft Teams.

This tailored workshop designed specifically for policing’s senior leaders will support you in understanding how your force can realise the value of your data assets. We will lead you through hands-on exercises, expert led discussions and leave you feeling excited and energised about the possibilities that well-managed data can bring.

Aimee Smith (Data Director at Metropolitan Police Service) and Teresa Ashforth (Head of Data at National Police Chiefs' Council) have over 30 years’ worth of experience in policing and data and already deliver content to the executive leaders programme (ELP). This session will focus on your responsibilities as chief officers, data essentials, what support and guidance is available to you through the National Data & Analytics Office and the opportunities that AI and other capabilities can provide when used on data that is fit for purpose.

This will be the first in a series of sessions which will not only benefit your force but will support national policing requirements and delivery against the Policing Strategy and Police Reform.

The science of power and emotional intelligence

Virtual via Microsoft Teams.

Join us for an engaging interactive session with Dr Britt Andreatta, a leading expert in neuroscience, leadership and emotional intelligence.

Neuroscience research has revealed some interesting patterns. Did you know that power changes the brain, making people more impulsive and less concerned with how their actions impact others? It also makes leaders more likely to project their own beliefs and feelings onto others, leading them to perceive signs of agreement that are not there. Executive training and coaching are crucial for counterbalancing this biological tendency and setting your senior and executive leadership up for ongoing success. This event will explore how power impacts decision-making and empathy, and the critical role of emotional intelligence in personal and organisational success.

Delegates will actively participate in exercises designed to enhance learning, focusing on self-regulation and managing emotions in challenging situations.

In this interactive session, you will:

  • Discover the surprising ways that power changes the brain, impacting decision making and empathy
  • Learn the core components of emotional intelligence and wellbeing
  • Explore strategies for improving self-regulation, managing challenging situations, and flourishing at work.

Please note that this session is limited to 50 places, allocated on a first come, first served basis.

This session is now full.

Building strength from within: unlocking the secrets of leader resilience

Virtual via Microsoft Teams.

In today’s increasingly unpredictable and unstable external environment, people rely on their leaders to guide individuals, teams, and organisations through the uncertainty. The combination of higher-risk decision-making and a volatile context presents significant challenges, where the outcomes of decisions can have major impacts. As a result, leaders must develop resilience – not just to endure these conditions but to adapt effectively and thrive. In contrast, certain leaders consistently operate in high-pressure settings where resilience is essential for both optimal performance and maintaining wellbeing.

Outside of work, resilience is a ‘life skill’. Resilience is a response to stress, and what causes each of us stress, is personal. As we navigate our life’s curveballs and opportunities, developing resilience helps us to cope, adapt and thrive, even during difficult times. Join Dr Suzanne Ross PhD, MSc, BSc (Hons), FHEA who has supported many leaders, senior experts, high achievers and entrepreneurs to flourish personally, and can support you too.

During this session you will:

  • Understand what resilience is and isn’t
  • Learn how to recognise your ‘stressors’
  • Explore effective coping strategies
  • Identify resources that help us be more resilient
  • Explore how leaders in high stakes environments build their resilience

This session draws together research in leader resilience and resilience in high stakes environments, with practical tools for developing your resilience.

Entry requirements

These events are tailored for individuals currently serving as SIROs (or likely to step into the role), specifically at the level of deputy chief constable, assistant chief constable, or equivalent.

Future dates
