Digital investigators foundation

Module two of a four-step process to being certified as a digital investigator (if undertaking the full programme)

If completing the full programme you are also required to undertake the two day immersive learning Hydra module and pass an online assessment.

By the end of this initial course, learners will be able to:

  • show knowledge and understanding of investigative opportunities presented by the exploitation of digital data
  • formulate and correctly record a strategy, based upon a scenario
  • demonstrate effective decision-making to support the senior investigating officer in a major investigation and an ability to change their strategy dynamically as the investigation progresses

Aims

​To provide the foundation and core skills to enable individuals to effectively perform the role of digital media investigator (DMI).

Objectives

Digital investigation foundation will enable learners to identify and respond to digital investigative opportunities when investigating volume and major crime, responding to incidents or participating in operations.

  • Understand the purpose and role of digital investigations.
  • Understand the investigative opportunities offered by the acquisition of communications and digital data, including at crime scenes and property searches.
  • Possess the ability to undertake open and closed source investigations in specific subjects to support incidents, operations and investigations.
  • Understand the role of the DMI and how they can support investigations by carrying out elements of a digital or data strategy.
  • Know who to seek support from when implementing the digital or data strategy.
  • Understand how to prepare and deliver reports in court as an appropriate expert.

Methods of delivery

​The module is trainer-led, classroom-based and delivered to a maximum of 15 delegates.

Learners are required to achieve a minimum score of 80% in the College Learn DMI assessment in order to attend the classroom-based element of the programme.​
