Mobile telephone evidence can play a critical role in criminal investigations.
The extent to which this evidence can be relied upon in court depends upon that evidence having been acquired in a forensically sound manner by a competent individual.
Aims
This course is intended to provide new or existing mobile phone examiners with exposure to appropriate forensic tools and procedures.
It will also equip them with an understanding of how GSM/4G networks operate and relevant legislation in this area.
Objectives
- explain the relationship between, and impact of, relevant England and Wales legislation on the work of the mobile phone forensic examiner
- understand a barrister's perspective on phone evidence
- provide guidance on good practice in the seizure and handling of mobile phones
- examine and obtain data from a media storage card
- use appropriate tools and procedures to retrieve data from a GSM or 4G (U)SIM card and mobile phone handset in a forensically sound manner
- identify and explain important telecoms components
- explain common acronyms in everyday use in mobile phone communications
This course will include the use of the following tools:
- MicroSystemation
- '.XRY'
- Oxygen Phone Manager
- Cellebrite
Methods of delivery
Trainer-led theoretical inputs and practical scenario-based exercises.

As this is an entry-level course, attendees do not require previous experience or training in mobile phone examination. However, some exposure to a mobile phone forensics environment would be desirable. |
