Going equipped issue 11
I start this edition with a tribute to Dr Jo Wilkinson, the College of Policing What Works Impact Manager, who very sadly recently died. Jo was integral to Going equipped from the very first edition back in 2020, and her passion for sharing good practice and innovation was infectious. Going equipped would not still be running today without her and she will be sadly missed by the editorial team. You will find an obituary on page 58 of this edition's download.
As usual, we have some great articles for you to read from forces across Great Britain, including an excellent article about the role and deployment of family liaison officers (FLOs) in Police Scotland.
Our first long read in this edition covers the use of sexual risk orders (SROs) and gives a fantastic overview of how using this order can reduce sexual harm by perpetrators. With the government mission to halve violence against women and girls, the limited use of SROs by forces could be a missed opportunity. I would encourage you to have a look at the detail.
The second long read discusses the human impact of criminal justice delays on victims, highlighting the emotional toil that such delays have on those involved. This is a really valuable article that discusses victim attrition and the value of witness care units.
A number of shorter articles cover everything from illegal e-vehicle crime to hot spot policing, from vetting to the National Police Air Service. If you are considering a role in firearms or close protection, or if you are investigating a case that involves child to parent abuse, there will be something of interest in this publication.
As always, if you are interested in writing an article for Going equipped, becoming a peer reviewer or joining the editorial board, please do get in touch by emailing goingequipped@college.police.uk
