Consultation on draft guidelines for effective supervision released
Our draft guidelines for effective supervision have now been released for consultation.
The guidelines focus on how we can support the wellbeing, development and performance of officers, staff and volunteers across policing. They set out the actions that supervisors can take to support their staff, the behaviours they need to display to be effective in their role and the actions that chief constables can take to support supervisors in their force.
Each guideline is based on evidence from established good practice in forces and social research. They provide recommendations for anyone who manages staff on a temporary or permanent basis, or might do so in the future. This includes police officers, police staff, special constables and volunteers. There are also guidelines which set out the organisational support needed to enable effective supervisory practice.
We’ve developed our guidelines for effective supervision in collaboration with serving police officer and staff supervisors, subject matter experts and academics. We now want feedback from people across policing who will be affected by the guidelines – including current or potential supervisors at all levels, and those involved in their development.
