National centre for violence against women and girls and public protection

Information about who we are and what we do at the national centre for violence against women and girls and public protection (NCVPP).

Who we are

We are the national centre for improving how police respond to public protection and violence against women and girls (VAWG) in England and Wales.

We are a joint initiative between the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) and the College of Policing, bringing together expertise from:

  • Operation Soteria (improving investigations into rape and serious sexual offenses)
  • the violence against women and girls taskforce
  • the vulnerability, knowledge and practice programme

Our mission

Working with partners to reduce the prevalence of violence against women and girls and public protection offences across England and Wales.

What we do

We support police forces to achieve the highest standards in tackling violence against women and girls and public protection, for the benefit of victims everywhere.

We help police forces to:

  • investigate domestic abuse, rape and sexual offences, child abuse, stalking and other crimes more effectively
  • support victims throughout the criminal justice process
  • bring more perpetrators to justice
  • meet consistent professional standards

We do this by:

  • training and upskilling officers
  • expanding what works with a focus on perpetrators
  • improving our service to victims
  • delivering evidence-based advice, peer review and support
  • using data, research and evaluation to drive continuous improvement

Further information

Guidance for police forces

We produce guidance and authorised professional practice (APP) to help police officers and staff protect women and girls from misogyny and bring criminals to justice.

Training and development

We support police officers and staff to help them identify vulnerability and situations that could present risk of harm.

Most of our training is available through College Learn and the Knowledge Hub. You will need to sign in to access these resources. You can find a list of our relevant College Learn modules on our violence against women: resources for policing page.
