Plan and run a structured debrief following an incident, exercise, operation or investigation
Aims
This course equips learners with the skills and knowledge required to plan and run a structured debrief, and to compile a debrief report.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- explain the theory behind the structured debriefing framework and its role in capturing organisational learning to continually improve
- understand and demonstrate the skills required during the structured debrief process
- know the importance of pre-planning a structured debrief
- understand how debriefing documentation relates to retention, disclosure and the Freedom of Information Act 2000
- construct a debrief report matrix of recommendations and supporting data
Debriefing skills include facilitation and scribing – the roles are not separated. Learners will leave the course being able to fulfil both roles. This is important when acting within part of a larger debrief team.
Who it is for
The course is relevant to those who are or may in the future be involved in running/organising debriefs as part of a debrief team. Debriefing is recognised as good practice and should be incorporated into business as usual as a consideration.
Course content
National structured debriefs capture organisational learning following an incident, exercise, operation, or investigation. The process is relevant at strategic, tactical, and operational levels, complementing single and multi-agency debriefs.
Location
There are two options for delivery of this course.
- An organisation can host the course on their own premises.
- Learners can apply to attend the one-day course held at Ryton or Harperley Hall on College of Policing premises.
Exact specifications can be discussed when booking the course.
Method of delivery
The course is one full day and can be delivered to up to 15 learners.
Two trainers deliver each course. Trainers are nationally approved to College of Policing standards. The trainers are all experienced national structured debriefers.
