National centre for violence against women and girls and public protection

The dedicated national centre for violence against women and girls and public protection (the Centre) supports forces with specialist knowledge and training for investigators and officers. It also leads on a national approach to preventing these crimes from happening, with other agencies.
Police chiefs declared violence against women and girls a national emergency last year, calling for a whole-system approach that brings together criminal justice partners, government bodies and industry to tackle the threat through prevention.
Joint initiative
The Centre is a joint initiative between the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and the College. It brings together:
- the vulnerability, knowledge and practice programme
- Operation Soteria
- the violence against women and girls taskforce
By consolidating our existing expertise, knowledge and skills, the Centre seeks to provide a more effective and joined up approach enabling the best outcomes for victims and bringing criminals to justice.
Aims
The Centre was established in April 2025 with funding from the Home Office. It is working to:
- achieve consistency of practice
- professionalise public protection
- tackle the scale of the challenge posed by violence against women and girls.
The Centre will build on the work of the three programmes so far and seek to provide an even greater joined-up response with more effective support across law enforcement, government and other partners. Victims and survivors are at the heart of everything the Centre does.
