We're inviting feedback about new guidelines on effective investigation through a public consultation. The consultation is now open and closes on Monday 12 September.

The Conducting effective investigations guidelines provide evidence-based guidance for investigating crime and incidents. They were developed by police officers and staff, subject matter experts and academics.

The five new guidelines include information on how:

  • investigators from all ranks, grades and roles can conduct effective investigations

  • managers and supervisors can support their teams and lead effective investigations

  • chief officers can show their force values, recognises and supports effective investigations

Crime is continuing to become more complex. It's important that those who investigate it are consistent, fair and impartial. By conducting effective investigations, policing can provide victims and suspects with the best outcomes.

The guidelines are for all police officers and staff involved in the investigative process. This includes call handlers, police community support officers (PCSOs), uniformed police constables and supervisors, and detectives.
